Stereoscopy

Stereoscopy is a technology for measuring distance. It photographs the surrounding environment from two slightly different perspectives. If pixels depicting an identical position within the environment are identified in both images, it means that the pixel positions are displaced relative to one another in the two images. This displacement can be used to calculate the distance from the pictured position, and therefore from all objects in the surrounding environment.
