Traceability, safety, efficiency: Laboratory automation makes it possible

Swiss-based company Inpeco, global leader in Total Laboratory Automation and long-term SICK customer, provides cutting-edge automation solutions to hospitals and clinical laboratories that integrate data, eliminate human error, and provide full control over their diagnostics processes – guaranteeing traceability, enhanced efficiency and patient safety.

The challenge: Check tube labels without stopping and improve productivity

Inpeco’s tailored lab automation solutions move and manipulate test tubes at very high speeds. They needed a fast and compact 1D fixed mount bar code scanner to quickly and accurately check sample tube labels without stopping or slowing down the conveyors. Moreover, Inpeco required a solution that could be easily integrated into the existing CANopen interface with minimal changes.

Inpeco selected the CLV62x fixed mount bar code scanner and W2 miniature photoelectric sensor to read the test tube labels in combination with an RFID write/read device.

The solution: SICK CLV62x scanner and W2 sensor

This is where SICK stepped in. Inpeco selected the CLV62x fixed mount bar code scanner and W2 miniature photoelectric sensor to be placed in multiple areas along the line to read the test tube labels in combination with an RFID write/read device. The photoelectric sensor triggers the bar code scanner’s laser, while an RFID device simultaneously reads the tags fixed under the rack support to double-check that they correctly match.

Beyond the fact that the compact size and flat housings of the CLV62x and W2 aided with the machine integration, the duo were also able to deliver the high speed and an excellent detection ratio.

Comprehensive support: based in Italy and on top of global healthcare regulations

After the initial implementation phase, SICK S.p.A. in Italy has continued to support Inpeco on keeping the installed base in compliance with the latest healthcare regulations. Indeed, SICK stands as one of the few sensor solution providers that are capable of providing the diverse range of certifications required by healthcare regulators around the world (e.g., IEC-UL) in terms of quality, safety, and lifetime.

Lasting partnership: Daily collaboration and ongoing support for growth

Since the beginning of their collaboration with SICK, Inpeco has rapidly grown, massively investing in their resources and employees. At every step of their expansion, SICK has been able to support Inpeco with their global presence. To date, Inpeco has ordered a substantial amount of CLV62x and W2s for lab automation solutions around the world. As Inpeco’s business continues to grow and regulatory requirements change, SICK will be ready right by their side.
