Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at SICK

SICK describes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in the following ways:

  • Diversity

Diversity is the recognition and respect of everyone's identities, qualities and differences, collectively and as individuals.

  • Equity

Equity is the ensuring of fair treatment, equality of opportunity, and fairness in access to information and resources for all.

  • Inclusion

Inclusion is a culture of belonging in which all individuals feel respected, accepted and valued.

SICK’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is a guiding principle which reinforces our mission statement: Independence, Innovation and Leadership. Our commitment is evident in our business strategy, corporate behavior, and relationships with our customers and our communities.

We define diversity as the recognition and respect of everyone's identities, qualities and differences, collectively and as individuals. Diversity can be described as any attribute that makes an individual unique such as age, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, language, physical ability, religion, family, citizenship status, socio-economic circumstances, education, and life experiences.

We also realize that it does not stop with diversity. We must also offer an equal and inclusive environment. To us, equity is the ensuring of fair treatment, equality of opportunity, and fairness in access to information and resources for all and inclusion is a culture of belonging in which all individuals feel respected, accepted and valued.

SICK strives to be a company that reflects the societies in which we operate. We place great emphasis on ensuring that the pool of applicants for every position is as diverse as possible. We strongly believe in maintaining an equal and inclusive workforce by ensuring that pay, promotions and performance recognition are determined without discrimination and that all feel welcome and valued here.

People of differing backgrounds and experiences bring unique perspectives to overcoming the challenges of our marketplace. Enhancing the diversity of our workforce improves our ability to be innovative in meeting the needs of our customers, developing new technologies, improving our methods of production and delivery, and continually evolving our organization to maintain a competitive edge. Seeking and maintaining a diverse workforce benefits our employees, partners, customers, and ultimately, our business.

  • Affinity Groups

Affinity Groups are voluntary associations of SICK employees who have common interests and values based on the SICK Way. These groups help promote and encourage the diversity and inclusion of all people with the workplace with the primary focus of making all feel welcome and heard.

    • PRIDE@SICK was established to further the advancement and interests of LGBTQ+ employees at SICK in Canada and the United States by providing a safe space where we can meet regularly, discuss pertinent topics and further develop our careers.pride
    • Women’s Leadership Empowerment Group was established to further the advancement of women by providing a forum where SICK employees can develop leadership competencies, discuss issues and share information. We have an enormous amount of wisdom, experience and vision within our midst, which, when collected and shared, can empower women at all levels in their careers to achieve success and satisfaction.
  • On Going Efforts

SICK values DEI and is on a journey of continuous improvement and growth in these areas. Below are the on-going efforts that SICK is focusing on to ensure that DEI maintains a top organizational focus and that our employees and leaders understand the importance of the path we are on and how to support it in their roles.

    • Advocating for DE&I: Our Management Board has made DEI a top organizational priority for the last few years and fully supports organization wide training and on-going efforts in these areas.
    • Leadership Training: All leaders have gone through DEI Workshops to further educate them on the topic and why SICK is focused on DEI and continuous improvement. This training will be annual to ensure that this is top of mind for our leaders.
    • Unconscious bias training: Unconscious bias is defined as bias that results from the tendency to process information based on unconscious associations and feelings, even when these are contrary to one’s conscious or declared beliefs. [dictionary.com] All employees have been made aware of what this means and how to make themselves more aware of what their biases are and how to deal with them. This is an on-going training that will be completed by employees and leaders on a regular cadence.
    • Talent acquisition and development: We have reviewed our hiring practices to ensure we are being inclusive and allowing candidates of all backgrounds to have the same opportunity for consideration in the process.

We are extremely proud of the efforts and focus on DEI but realize that we are still on a journey to do better. We are committed to improving in these areas to ensure that all are welcome and given the same opportunity for success at SICK.
