Reliable accuracy of safety laser
scanners thanks to safeHDDM® technology
The microScan3, nanoScan3 and outdoorScan3 safety laser scanners from SICK offer decisive advantages for plant availability and
productivity thanks to the innovative safeHDDM® scanning technology.
safeHDDM® is based on the HDDM (HDDM = high definition distance measurement) process, which has been proven in practice many times over, and is setting a new benchmark in the evaluation of optical time-of-flight measurements. The patented process developed by SICK delivers unique measurement results for safety laser scanners by filtering and evaluating many individual pulses. In this way, safeHDDM® enables very high resistance to dirt, dust and ambient light. The most important part: safeHDDM® retains its reliability. Even an object with a remission factor of just 1.8%, for example black suit pants, is reliably detected by the safety laser scanner.
And that’s not all: With outdoor safeHDDM®, the scanning technology was advanced for outdoor use. This makes the outdoorScan3 the first safety laser scanner certified for outdoor use.
safeHDDM®: safe to use, reliable for everyday tasks, precise in application.
How it works
Safe distance measurement in line with the
principle of optical time-of-flight measurement
With optical time-of-flight measurement, the sensor emits a pulse beam that is reflected by the object to be detected. The time-of-flight that the beam needs for the path is evaluated, thus calculating the distance to the object. The microScan3, nanoScan3 and outdoorScan3 typically perform a scan cycle in 40 milliseconds. Thousands of individual pulses are filtered per scan cycle. The safety laser scanners then calculate up to 2,750 reliable measured values from these thousands of individual pulses.

The safeHDDM® scanning technology patented by SICK enables reliable operation of your application, and also boasts a small design and large scanning ranges.
The safety laser scanners are resistant to dirt, dust and ambient light, thus ensuring high availability. This is how they prevent machine downtime.
Even in unfavorable weather conditions in outdoor areas, the outdoor safeHDDM® scanning technology ensures high availability with its sophisticated filters and algorithms.
How our customers benefit from safeHDDM®
Safety without a safety fence
Safety laser scanners from the microScan3 product family as well as the Flexi Soft safety controller ensure safe operation of a robot on an injection molding machine. Thanks to safeHDDM® scanning technology, the detection capability and the reliable protective function are not impaired by dust particles in the environment or by the formation of coatings on the optical interface of the sensors.
Weatherproof robotic mower
The outdoorScan3 safety laser scanner works reliably and safely, even in challenging weather conditions. The patented and high-precision outdoor safeHDDM® can tell the difference between real safety risks and disruptive environmental influences.
At a glance: The SICK safety laser scanners with safeHDDM®
The microScan3 safety laser scanner provides protection for a wide range of applications, from stationary to mobile, from simple to complex. The innovative safeHDDM® scanning technology makes the microScan3 incredibly resistant, even in dusty environments and those with ambient light, and also delivers high-precision measurement data. This increases the productivity and availability of machines.
The nanoScan3 is the smallest safety laser scanner from SICK. It is the perfect choice for protecting mobile platforms. At the same time, it delivers precise measurement data for navigation. Thanks to its size, it is also ideal for protecting machines in confined spaces. Like the microScan3, it features the safeHDDM® scanning technology with all its advantages.
The outdoorScan3 is perfectly suited for protecting stationary and mobile outdoor applications. For this safety laser scanner, the patented safeHDDM® technology from SICK went through some major developmental improvements with the aid of special algorithms for outdoor applications. This means the outdoorScan3 can take advantage of non-contact protection using safety laser scanners for outdoor areas for the first time.
