Focusing on the blind spot: active collision awareness systems for mobile automation
With mobile machines, accidents often occur when maneuvering and reversing on construction sites, in open-cast and underground mining, and in agriculture and forestry, as well as with municipal and special vehicles. With the Visionary-B CV 3D vision sensor, an active driver assistance system is available to monitor the area next to and behind mobile machines. It reliably identifies people and objects in the driver's blind spot and warns of collisions.

Motion sequences must be monitored before they can be optimized
“Wanna bet” – that you can use an excavator shovel to place the tone arm of a record player precisely between two songs on a record, or hang up six socks with two excavators in the space of four minutes? Yes, you can. Several candidates on the German TV show “Wetten, dass...?” (“Wanna bet?”) won their bets thanks to their skills with an excavator. But what these clever contestants tried out for fun – namely operating a commercial vehicle with high precision – is now an established automated process in agriculture and forestry, road construction, mining, etc.

Goodbye to system failures in mining
Traditionally, the Chinese mining industry uses scale systems to calculate output. Due to the harsh environment and especially due to bad weather conditions, these often fail or deliver incorrect results. The system providers must then send their service engineers into the mine for every malfunction. The Bulkscan® LMS511 flow sensor is now in use. It reliably measures the volume on the belt and prevents belt misalignment – even in bad weather.

Mobile connectivity: intelligent networking and digitalization
The TDC (Telematic Data Collector) gateway system collects and saves data from several sensors, even different ones, using various interfaces. The mobile communication feature – WLAN or Ethernet – included with the system transmits the data to a customer server or the SICK cloud. Analyses can also be performed in the TDC system based on the incoming data to provide real-time outputs (reactions) via I/Os or SMS messages (alarms). The incoming and outgoing data can be used for downstream process optimization and to improve transparency, thereby increasing productivity. SICK offers optional customer-specific cloud solutions (SaaS) for this purpose.

Challenges

Monitoring and controlling
Analyzers and analyzer solutions monitor and check emission limit values, the atmosphere in underground mines and the emission of pollutants into the environment. The MINESIC700 GHG from SICK monitors CO2 values in mining to monitor greenhouse gas emissions and is part of the company’s extensive product range.

Measuring
Sensors and sensor systems from SICK are ideal for precise and direct measurement of volume and mass flow. For optimal management of conveyor belt usage and reduction of incidents, the speed, loading height and distribution of bulk material are monitored.

Protection
The protection of persons, machines and property is of utmost priority in mines. SICK sensors and sensor solutions protect hazardous areas, machine positions and movements. The innovative and groundbreaking products from SICK fulfill this task with flying colors.

Service
The SICK experts offer expert consultation, qualified support, detailed project planning and development as well as installation and commissioning services. SICK is also available for maintenance for planned downtime as well as in emergencies.
Collision awareness

Visionary-B 3D vision sensor
The Visionary-B 3D vision sensor is ideal for driver assistance on heavy, off-road commercial vehicles used outdoors. The monitor displays live images, which warn the operator with visual and acoustic signals before infringements of the 3D detection area. The system warns the driver only in critical driving situations, e.g., when maneuvering. A plug and play solution, the Visionary-B is a breeze to parameterize and operate, and is ready for use in a matter of moments.

2D and 3D LiDAR sensors
2D and 3D LiDAR sensors can cover a large range of applications. The two- or multiple-dimension contour data recorded can be processed both internally and externally. The products in the 2D LiDAR sensor product range, depending on the type, are suited for contour guidance and collision warning in driver assistance systems of mobile machines. Thanks to their rugged design and excellent performance even in unfavorable weather conditions, the 2D and 3D LiDAR sensors form the core of our collision warning assistance systems.

Driver assistance systems
SICK offers complete sensor system solutions for the realization of driver assistance systems for collision warning. These intelligent systems significantly reduce the integration and evaluation effort for the mechanical engineer. An example of this is the MINESIC sensor system.
