Overview

Intelligent sensors for more powerful mobile machines

SICK accompanies you as an expert sensor partner on the way towards highly automated and autonomous mobile machines. Intelligent solutions suited for daily use that meet expectations both in terms of increased productivity and lower process costs are developed by integrating sensors and sensor systems. The Mobile Automation industry encompasses agricultural, forestry, construction and mining machines as well as special and municipal vehicles. The main tasks of sensors in Mobile Automation include environment sensing and assistance solutions, motion control, smart data and connectivity, and functional safety. With these in mind, SICK offers a comprehensive portfolio ranging from standard sensors and intelligent sensors with integrated application algorithms through to complex system solutions.

Fields of expertise

Solutions – designed for machine manufacturers

SICK has a comprehensive, innovative technology portfolio. Based on these technologies, SICK develops tailor-made sensor solutions for mobile machines. The portfolio ranges from standard sensors and sensors with integrated application software through to complex sensor system solutions. Please contact us if you are interested. We would be happy to provide you with more information.

Motion control and positioning

Sensors such as encoders, inclination, proximity and ultrasonic sensors, as well as pressure and level sensors manufactured by SICK, are the basis of numerous positioning and detection tasks in mobile machines.

Collision warning

Driver assistance systems based on LiDAR sensors or 3D vision sensors from SICK reliably detect blind zones around mobile machines and warn the operator of potential sources of danger or accidents in good time. This means that the driver is able to identify and avoid possible collisions before they happen. As a result, damage is less often caused to the vehicle and its surroundings. This reduces the machine downtime and repair costs.

Contour guidance

Driver assistance systems for contour guidance based on LiDAR sensors from SICK increase the efficiency of mobile machines, while at the same time reducing the operator’s workload. Intelligent sensors with integrated application software can evaluate the raw data and the vehicle data themselves. Application-relevant results are therefore available without CPU-intensive processing in the driver assistance system provided by the vehicle manufacturer.

Visionary-B 3D assistance system prevents accidents when driving backwards

In fall, huge mountains of sugar beets pile up at Pfeifer & Langen with headquarters in Cologne. One of the leading sugar producers in Europe is supplied with millions of beets during the “Sugar Beet Harvest” campaign. The seemingly endless delivery by huge trucks and redistribution by wheel loaders creates a huge amount of logistical effort. In order to increase collision avoidance safety for reversing wheel loaders and workers at the beet plate reloading point, the sugar producer, in close cooperation with the RCI professional association, decided on the sharp eye of the Visionary-B CV 3D driver assistance system from SICK.

Accident and collision avoidance with the driver assistance system

Multi-million-dollar damage that occurs during aircraft ground handling leads to high insurance payouts every year. As a result, ground handling services are encumbered with higher insurance premiums. In order to avoid damage, Lufthansa LEOS GmbH relies on SICK’s laser scanner experience when tugging aircrafts and is putting the APS driver assistance system from SICK to the test for its aircraft tractor fleet. At sites in Frankfurt and Munich, LEOS operates a fleet totaling 38 aircraft tractors. Each aircraft tractor deals with an average of eight to fifteen tugs or pushbacks a day. During these maneuvers, collisions with objects on the runway or in the hangar or even other aircrafts are possible.
