Image-based code readers

Ready for any code

Image-based code readers combine performance and flexibility. In demanding applications, they read a variety of code types such as 1D or 2D codes, DPM codes and miniature codes. The cameras also identify colored and damaged codes, regardless of the marking method and surface. This ensures very good read rates, even at high speeds and with changing rotational positions of the codes.

Advantages

The benefits of image-based identification

The image-based code readers from SICK are real multi-talents. Whether barcode, Data Matrix, QR, maxi code or miniature codes – thanks to intelligent image processing, there are virtually no limits to the flexible use of different code types.

- Flexibly reads different 1D and 2D code types, even miniature codes

- Captures even heavily damaged or incomplete codes

- Delivers live images and can store them for documentation and later analysis

- Detects codes regardless of the rotational position (360° reading)

- Long service life since there are no moving parts that can wear out

The guarantees of freedom for factory automation

Since transparent tracking of components in factory automation is becoming more and more important, the variety of objects, materials, code types and ambient conditions that code readers have to deal with is also increasing. That means it is all the more practical that image-based code readers are real jacks of all trades.
For difficult-to-identify direct markings Codes applied directly to surfaces are often small, get contaminated easily and can reflect on metallic components. The progressive DPM decoder helps to correctly read even hard-to-detect codes of less than 1 mm in size.
For reflective materials To ensure that the illumination does not produce any disturbing reflections, for instance on foils, the image-based code readers offer two solutions: A polarizing filter that eliminates reflections and a screw-on dome that uniformly illuminates the reading area.
For color codes and backgrounds Especially when it comes to weak contrast differences, two different LED colors increase the quality of the captured images. This allows for reliable identification of colored codes or codes on colored backgrounds.
For high process speeds To read codes in machines or on conveyor belts at cycle rates of up to 40 Hz, image-based code readers rely on an optimized decoding speed. Irrelevant information such as logos or texts is hidden by the software, which shortens the computing time and increases the decoding speed.
For synchronous recognition of several codes In order to reliably read several codes at one time in the field of view, the automatic parameter switching function optimizes the image quality by automatically switching through certain camera parameters for each code.
For undisturbed work Variants with infrared light illumination prevent glare effects and light changes. This means that work can continue undisturbed, even in the immediate vicinity of the code reader.

The enabler for logistics automation

Conveyor belts are becoming faster and faster, and the flow of goods are also getting increasing denser. The increased volume of goods makes reliable reading more demanding, and at the same time essential. With image-based code readers, processes can be made more flexible. In addition to identifying codes, image-based identification systems can also solve other tasks, thus fulfilling complex requirements.
For difficult-to-read codes Worn, contaminated or partially covered codes are a common phenomenon that can become a problem. Thanks to the powerful logistics decoder, even codes that are incomplete or difficult to read or can be identified. This prevents incorrect assignments and faults during operation.
For high speeds on conveyor belts Thanks to the “key region detection” function, only relevant image areas are decoded. This ensures fast data processing and higher throughput rates.
For variable object heights Whether parcels are flat, medium-sided or tall – the dynamic focus always produces a sharp, perfectly illuminated image. The quality of code reading is independent of the distance between the camera and the object.

At home in many industries

The transitions between factory and logistics automation are fluid. Image-based code readers impress here with flexible application options and enable quick, efficient and reliable processes in many industries.
Consumer goods industry Reliable tracking at high speeds and fast cycle rates: The requirements of the pharmaceutical and food industries for transparency and productivity can be met very efficiently with image-based code readers.
Automotive industry In engine production, components with dot-peened DPM codes must be traceable without gaps. Powerful algorithms enable reliable detection here, even if contamination and reflections are present.
Electronics and solar industry In applications such as parts tracking and quality assurance, image-based readers identify even the smallest codes, regardless of whether they are Data Matrix codes on printed circuit boards or directly marked 2D codes on solar wafers.
Airports, courier, express, parcel, and postal (CEP) System solutions are ideal for identifying randomly positioned objects on conveyor belts at high speeds. Integrated cameras detect the objects from all sides. The benefits of intelligent and powerful decoding: Smooth processes and a particularly high turnover rate.
Retail and warehousing Image-based code readers and reading tunnels ensure more convenience and fast material handling at semi-automated manual workstations. Feedback LEDs plays an important role here.
Industrial vehicles The GLS is ideal for smooth navigation and precise position determination of automated guided vehicle systems. At high speeds, it reliably reads 2D codes for grid localization on the ground, enabling high-performance, flexible warehouse logistics.

Perfect identification? More than a vision. Whether laser, camera or RFID: Each identification technology has its advantages – and sometimes it takes more than just one of them. In order to find an optimal solution for the respective application, we compare the different technologies and provide a practical identification explorer to help you make a decision.
Flexible reading plus additional data: A question of the system Camera system solutions are always in demand wherever extensive logistics data needs to be collected or codes need to be read reliably, regardless of where the code is actually located. The modular system setup enables individual extensions such as the capture of object dimensions and weight. The high-resolution images can also be used for downstream processes such as plain text reading to entirely capture address fields.
