Sensor solutions for mobile platforms: Navigation and positioning

Mobile platforms are moving automatically or autonomously between different points in the production or logistics environment. To make sure that they find their way diverse sensor solutions for navigation and positioning are necessary, which serve to localize and navigate mobile platforms.

Line guidance

Line guidance is a simple, inexpensive and common way of navigating mobile platforms. A sensor detects and tracks a pattern or line on the floor so that the mobile platform is guided within the given lane.

For localization applications sensors are used to determine the absolute position of mobile platforms in their environment. Suitable solutions vary from grid localization with 2D Codes to free reflector or contour localization.

Robot butler that moves around by itself

The young Danish company Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR) introduced the German market to the MiR100, a mobile transport robot that works like clockwork. Built-in S300 safety laser scanners, 3D cameras, and ultrasound ensure that the robot stops automatically as soon as it encounters a person or a static object.

Navigating crop robots with 2D-LiDAR sensor

How do you navigate an agricultural robot through a field? The major challenge of this application is found not only in the wide variety of crops out there, but also in the fact that crop rows are neither completely straight nor all the same width.
