Overview

Reliable solutions for gas, dust and flow measurement

Refineries and chemical plants operate in an extremely challenging environment. Handling of hazardous materials within large scale, highly dynamic markets, stiff global competition, and stringent environmental standards are key characteristics of that industry. Process automation on multiple levels across the whole value chain greatly contributes to plant profitability by operational excellence and safety. In particular, process analyzers play an essential role in reducing production costs, enhancing product yields, increasing plant safety, and ensuring compliance with local emission regulations. They fulfill vital tasks in different parts of the plant and maximize efficiency and uptime of many process units.

Trends & news

At the beginning there was hydrogen

The most important processes for hydrogen generation are steam reforming of light hydrocarbons, partial oxidation of hydrocarbons or carbon, and water electrolysis. Steam reforming of natural gas is the dominating technology with about 90% of worldwide production of hydrogen. SICK offers customized gas analysis for process and emission monitoring for industrial processes having to do with ammonia production.

Reducing hazards in the process industries

Continuous plant availability and a high level of operational safety are of utmost importance in the process industry. The world of work is undergoing rapid changes. Plants are becoming more complex, regulations more stringent, and there is an urgent need to find practical solutions for the energy revolution and environmental protection. This is increasing the pressure on plant operators. Cost efficiency is only one aspect for consideration. The other key issue is the safety of humans as well as the plant and equipment.

The O2 dual – laser transmitter vs paramagnetic measurement

The TRANSIC100LP laser transmitter from SICK has exactly the right nose for oxygen – and a customer’s own comparison has proved this. Pitted against the established method of paramagnetic measurement, TDLS technology is able to offer a lower initial investment level for measuring stations, and much more besides. It also considerably reduces operating and maintenance costs for controlling inerting processes.

Fields of application

Process control

The objective of process optimization and control is to increase the product yield while at the same time reducing waste and preventing operational limits of the plant from being exceeded. These are key factors for productivity in everyday operation. Analyzers deliver valuable information on the composition of process streams along the entire value-adding chain. Their data are often integrated into distributed control systems to allow closed loop control.

Quality control

Quality control ensures that both source materials and final products meet the required purity specifications. It also contributes fundamentally to the profitability of plants because defective products have a negative impact on the sales price. Process analyzers are used to measure primary products at concentrations of close to 100% as well as to precisely determine contaminants in the ppm range.

Emission monitoring

Certain chemical substances are pollutants because they harm the environment and pose a risk to health. These substances are typically produced in combustion processes and escape as exhaust gas through the stack. To comply with local emission regulations, many plants are using continuous emission measurement systems (CEMS) and data acquisition systems to monitor pollutants.

Safety and protection

Protecting people and ensuring the safety of the plant always has top priority. All hydrocarbons are flammable and pose an imminent explosion risk when oxygen is present. Other substances are extremely corrosive or poisonous. Online analyzers measure process streams and the ambient air to identify critical process states and leaks. Reliable and fast analyzers are essential for avoiding plant failures and accidents.

Measurement

Raw materials, final products and operating materials are valuable inventories of a plant. Due to the high material throughput in chemical plants, their consumption and production must be monitored with a high level of accuracy to ensure proper billing. Likewise, pollutant emissions need to be constantly quantified. The ultrasonic flowmeters from SICK offer a reliable solution for measuring the flow of a wide range of process gases.
