SICK expands safety portfolio with radar solution for safe person detection in harsh environments

Oct 8, 2019

Waldkirch/ Germany, October 8th, 2019 – SICK has added radar to its technology portfolio for safe hazardous area monitoring. Particularly in harsh production environments, where disturbances such as wood, paper, plastic or metal trimmings can challenge many existing solutions, radar technology convinces with its high availability. For this reason, SICK will add the first safe radar system worldwide, developed by its Italian partner INXPECT S.p.A., to its portfolio. safeRS will be available in autumn 2019. Thus, SICK offers a comprehensive product range of electro-sensitive protective devices.

Safety first: a principle in the industrial environment. SICK already supplies a wide range of safety laser scanners, safety light beam systems, safety switches and safety controllers for safeguarding various applications. These optoelectronic protective devices can reach their physical limits, especially in harsh environments due to interference, especially in the case of clouds of dirt. This can result in machine downtime. For this reason, SICK is now expanding its portfolio to include new safety solutions with robust radar technology, enabling reliable person detection with maximum productivity – even under demanding ambient conditions.

safeRS is a non-contact 3D protective device based on the LBK System from Inxpect, the world's first safe radar system with performance level d & SIL 2 in accordance with ISO 13849-1 & IEC 62061. safeRS, consisting of a control unit and up to six radar sensors, safeguards hazardous areas in a wide variety of stationary applications. For example, automated machines are able to switch to safe mode as soon as people enter or stay in the protected area. Thanks to the high robustness against dirt, dust, wood chips, flying sparks as well as vibration and shock, reliable operation is ensured even under difficult conditions. The safeRS also features a robust housing, a free configuration and diagnostic software, as well as quick and easy commissioning.

“Radar is a technology that exhibits unique features”, explains Luca Salgarelli, Inxpect’s CEO and co-founder. “Inxpect is the first company to introduce this distinctive potential to the market of advanced industrial automation and robotics. We are proud that SICK, one of the world leaders in industrial sensors, has chosen our company to help make this new exciting technology available to the widest possible user base”.

„Know how in new technologies and expert knowledge in intense safety applications is an ideal combination. The start up mentality from INXPECT and the innovators mind set of SICK move safety in new dimensions. The worldwide availability of hundreds of SICK safety specialists give our customers immediate access to safe radar sensor technology from INXPECT and as a result our customer create save productivity”, explains Berthold Ketterer, Senior Vice President Industrial Safety at SICK AG.
