Different from one dimensional or stacked codes that can be read with line or laser sensors easily, a 2D-Code requires a more complex solution. Here a real two-dimensional picture of the code is taken which then is evaluated by special software algorithms. So a 2D-Code reader can be seen as sophisticated image proccesing system.

An optimal solution for 2D-Code reading needs the exact knowledge of all technical requirements like for example contrast ratio or object velocity,. Also cell size, code resolution and depth of field as well as the required reading distance have to be considered. Special challenges are among others optical reflections or bad marking qualities.
