Challenge: Quality Control
EHP European-Hardwood Production operates a hardwood lumber mill employing band saw technology that processes some 50,000 solid cubic meters of wood annually in Frauental, Austria. The facility produces sawn timber (primarily for the furnishings and floorings industries) out of oak, beech, ash and maple trees. In order to ensure sustainability and efficiency, optimal resource utilization, and increased throughput, HISOFT Automatisierungs- und Informationstechnik GmbH was tasked with developing a solution to measure the contours and inspect the surfaces of tree trunks. The requirements included flexible adaptability, robust durability within its operational environment, rapid integration, ease of operation, and low investment and operating costs.
Solution: Optimizing sawn and improving the manufacturing process via integration of a Laser Measurement System for 3D tree trunk measurement in a band saw
The solution entails integrating a laser measurement system (LMS400) into an existing log band saw. The measurement surveys the contours, dimensions, cut type, and surface characteristics of each tree trunk. This data is processed to create a 3D model, which a saw pattern optimization program uses to determine sawn timber recovery on the basis of the final product weight, and displays cross-sections and suggestions for cutting the wood. Because the entire tree truck is surveyed and measured, the shape and structure of the tree trunk do not affect automated processing. A variety of log records and lists, such as volume and performance records, can be generated by specific date, if required."The major advantage of the scanner is that it's easy and economical to use. The scanner operates reliably regardless of the source of light – even without outside illumination – and does not need to be shielded or enclosed, even under rough ambient conditions," said Mario Zinterl of HISOFT.
Customer Benefits:Flexible processing of a variety of tree trunksOptimization of resource use with simultaneous improvement of saw throughputOperator can easily undertake simple setting adjustments
By integrating a laser measurement system from SICK, HISOFT was able to provide EHP with an easily integrated, reliable, rapid and cost-effective solution to optimize sawn timber recovery. Because of its flexibility and its easily adjustable measurement parameters, HISOFT was able to optimally parameterize the laser measurement system to the task. With an overall concept, which combines laser measurement and computerized assessment, small and mid-sized firms are provided with an innovative, easily integrated, and cost-effective solution to increase profitability, both in new construction and in modernization.
For EHP, the accuracy of measurement, the measurement's insensitivity to color and surface characteristics, as well as the real-time data output for saw control ensures optimal resource use, improved order scheduling, and improved facility utilization. This reduces raw material and processing costs, increases throughput, and enhances customer loyalty.
